Connecting the MobilePro to a Windows NT Machine

Things to do before starting.

  1. The customer MUST have Service Pack 3 or 4; Service Pack 4 is preferred.
  2. Remove Remote Access Server (RAS) if it is installed.
  3. Check to see if they have ever used their serial port. (This will tell us if we should expect the port to work.) You may need to remove any ports listed and reinstall them.
  4. Remove the Dial-Up Networking Serial Cable between 2 PCs from modems.
  5. Uninstall CE Services from the desktop.
  6. Disconnect the MobilePro from the computer.
  7. Power off the MobilePro.


Installing CE Services on the NT System:
  1. Make sure the serial ports are enabled and configured in CMOS.
  2. Make sure that the serial ports are enabled and installed in NT.
    1. Click on Start, Settings, and Select Control Panel.
    2. Double-click on Ports.
    3. Click on the Add button and install COM ports 1 and/or 2 using the same configuration as those used in CMOS.
    4. Once the COM ports are installed, select the option to restart the computer.
  3. Go to the User Manager, and Configure the User Account.
    1. Click on Start, Programs, Administrative Tools (Common), and select User Manager.
    2. Highlight Guest in the Username field.
    3. Click on User and go down to Properties.
    4. Add Guest to the Full Name line.
    5. Remove the password from the Password and Confirm password fields.
    6. Take the checks out of everything except: Password Never Expires and User Cannot Change Password.
    7. Click the Dialin button (at the bottom)
    8. Make sure there is a check in Grant Dialin permission to user.
    9. Make sure there is a dot in No call back.
    10. Click OK.
    11. Click OK again on the User Properties box.
    12. From the User Manager box, select Options from the bar and make sure there is a checkmark next to Save Setting on Exit.
    13. Under Options on the Tool bar make sure there is a check by Save Settings on Exit.
    14. Close out User Manager.
  4. Put the CE services CD in the drive.
    1. If the CD doesn't auto-run, click Start, Run and type X:\setup.exe (where X is the CD-ROM drive letter) and click ok.
    2. Choose Option 1 from the CE Service's Auto-run . This will install MS Schedule+7.0a
    3. Then choose option 2 to install MS Windows CE Service.
  5. Install and Configure the RAS (Remote Access Service)
    1. Double-click on Network in Control Panel.
    2. Select the Services tab.
    3. Click on Add and select Remote Access Service then click OK.
    4. A message stating that files from the Windows NT setup CD are needed.
    5. Insert the Windows NT Setup CD, and point to the X:\I386 directory on the CD where X is the drive letter.
      • If the system is an NEC system with an NEC hotload, point to the C:\i386 directory.
    6. Click on Install Modem
    7. Place a check mark in the box for "Don't detect my modem, I will select it from a list." and click Next.
    8. From the screen select "Dial Up Networking -Serial Cable
    9. Click OK, and reboot when prompted.
  6. Reinstall the Windows NT Service Pack (Service Pack 4 or above recommended)
  7. Reboot the system. Upon entering Windows, the system will go out and try to find the HPC. When it does, it will display a login prompt (this is separate from the normal login screen). Enter Guest for the User Name, and leave Password and Domain blank. This should be the only time that this step is necessary.
  8. Connect the 770 (use the serial cable) to the desktop.
  9. Mobile Services should now see the HPC.
  10. When you go to access the HPC it will then ask you to log in again.
    • It will ask you for your Schedule+ login. If the user does not have a User Name, make up one and click OK. It will then ask to save that name as a file and every time the unit is synchronized that login name will need to be confirmed.
