Question:
How do I get the Versa LX and SX to detect the HP Colorado 8 GB tape drive in the VersaDock?
Answer: The Versa LX and SX will not recognize the HP Colorado 8GB Tape Drive when installed in the VersaDock.

Question:
Unable to use Ghost to clone a computer that uses Windows 2000
Answer: It depends on the version of Ghost being used. Ghost version 6.0.3 will be able to clone the entire drives, or system partitions. Ghost 6.0.3 is not compatible with dynamic partitions. Windows 2000 will not be able to read encrypted files and directories when a SID has changed (during a roll out, Ghost Walker provides a unique SID to each for each client computer). To prevent this problem, unencrypt all files and directories before cloning a Windows 2000 system, then re-encrypt the files and directories using Ghost Walker on the client machines to provide new usernames and SIDs.
Versions of Ghost prior to 6.0.3 do not support Windows 2000, and can only perform a direct sector-by-sector clone of the entire drive. To do this use the -IA switch when running Ghost.
These earlier versions of Ghost can properly clone partitions in FAT 16, FAT32, and NTFS. When the newer NTFS from Windows 2000 is used, Ghost can only perform a sector by sector copy.

Question:
When running Windows 95 on the Versa SX or LX, why do I have problems with PCMCIA (PCCard or CardBus) cards?
Answer: Windows 95 does not have native support for the PCMCIA controller.
Possible symptoms/problems we have found are:
- PCMCIA Controller not recogized in Device Manager.
- Random lockups or "hanging" with either a modem or NIC (network interface card).
- Unable to work with Xircom RealPort card.
An updated installation file (.inf) has been created for Windows 95 to correct this. It can be found on our download page, titled ricohinf.exe.
Just run the file, and follow the instructions listed in the "readme.txt" file. Note: running the file will cause the compressed files to automatically extract into the same directory.
Side note: The readme.txt file references two additional updates that may be installed. Those updates, in addition to the above-listed fix, are bundled together in the file named ricoh.exe on our download site.

Question:
Why won't some CD-R or CD-RW disks play in my CD-ROM?
Answer: Not all CD-R CD-RW disk media are created equal. CD-R and CD-RW disks have different color pigmentations and different surface reflection characteristics. The firmware in CD burners contains a table of supported media with a write sensitivity setting for each disk type. If the disk type is not in the firmware table, a default setting is used and the CD burn results are not guaranteed. This situation has been experienced with some Kodak disks.

Question:
Why does "Not enough memory" error appear when restoring my Versa system?
Answer: This resolution applies to the Versa LX with AGP, but may also appear on the Versa LX, SX and Versa Note. The Product Recovery Utility provided in the original NEC Windows 95 and 98 Recovery CDs did not support hard drives larger that 8 GB. This has been fixed on recovery CDs released after May 3rd, 1999.
Follow the steps below:
- Contact NEC Technical Support (866-632-8061) for the password to the Secured Download site. Go to http://support.necam.com/ftp/techdrivers.asp and download NewRestore.exe.
- Run NewRestore.exe, it will extract its contents to a diskette.
- Boot the system using the product recovery CD.
- Quit from the Product Recovery Utility by selecting "Decline" at the license agreement which will exit to DOS with the prompt D:\Tools.
- Insert diskette with extracted files.
- Type the following: B:\Update.bat
This batch file will copy RESTORE.EXE, RESTORE.RTC and 1.PCX from the floppy (mapped as drive B: when booted to the CD) to the RAM Drive and then will execute the Product Recovery Utility.
- Follow the normal product recovery procedures.
Note: The above procedure allows a previously released Product Recovery CD to use the newer version of the Product Recovery Utility. The known limitations of this utility are related to the amount of memory required to restore certain images and the inability to restore images to certain large drives regardless of the amount of memory installed.

Question:
How do you prevent the case of a carrier mounted LX from deforming at extreme temperatures?
Answer: When an LX is mounted on a carrier using retaining straps, such as the Jotto-Desk, and is exposed to a high temperature environment as in a parked car, the case can be deformed by incorrect strap placement.
To prevent case deforming at high temperatures, place the mounting cables on the strongest part of the case and avoid mounting points where there are openings in the case, such a drive cavity or card slot opening. The strongest point for a mounting strap is directly
below the keyboard over the screw studs, and in back, just above the keyboard. Do not put the mounting straps over the PCMCIA sockets. See the picture below for correct strap placement.
Also, verify that the carrier mounting cables are not over tightened. Over stretching the tension spring reduces it ability to maintain constant tension on the unit.
It should be noted that the Recommend Environmental storage temperature limit as listed in the User Guide is 104 º F.

Question:
Why don't some devices work on the Parallel port of the USB Portbar?
Answer: Note: This issue is for the USB Portbar, not the Versa FX. As the USB PortBar was originally designed for the Versa FX, this issue is listed under the FX heading, although the same situation would occur with any system using the USB Portbar.
A limitation of the parallel port on the USB Portbar is that the bi-directional interface is not fully supported. Because just the Output mode is functional, the port is limited to printer support. In addition, any printer status-checking software may show that the printer is not operating correctly.
The parallel interface on the Versa FX machine itself fully supports ECP, EPP, and Bi-directional modes.

Unable to hear sound through external speakers when my system is docked
Answer: This information applies to the Versa SX, LX, LX with AGP and LXi.
It is recommended to first install the latest audio drivers while the system is undocked.

- Download and install ESS Maestro-2E Audio driver version 5.12.01.2037 or above for the appropiate system from the public web download area or FTP site .
- After installation of this driver, audio works correctly with no additional changes needed.
If running Windows NT 4.0:
- Double-click the yellow speaker icon in the System Tray.
- Click Options, put a check next to "Advanced Controls" (this option is only available while the system is docked).
- Click the "Advanced" button in the lower left hand corner of the Volume Control window.
- Put a check in the Docking station speaker box as shown below.

- Close all windows.
If running Windows 95 or 98:
Note: The Versa LXi audio works correctly with no changes needed.
- Right click on My Computer icon on the desktop, select Properties.
- Click on the Device Manager tab.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
