Frequently asked Questions

Q: Do I need a driver?
A: No drivers are required for Windows® XP (Home, Professional), and Windows 2000, and Windows ME. It isn't necessary to install driver or program for preference setup. DVD and CD writing software must be purchased seperately.

Q: What would happen if illegal Firmware copies were used?
A: Optical drives are high-precision products. Usage environment and dispersion of parts characteristics will dramatically change performance. To absorb these dispersions and maintain the best performance, unique parameters are set up on every drive at each stage of production. Using illegal F/W copies may change these parameters. In such case, writing and reading performance could deteriorate, even though your drive works normally. We at NEC strongly urge you not to use such illegal copies.

Disk Drive Warranty Policy
Warranty services and technical support for the end users of NEC's disk drives are the responsibility of the distributor, wholesaler or retailer from which the unit was purchased unless the product documentation specifies that NEC supports the drive and is validated by NEC Corporation of America.

Purchasers of bare drives must obtain support from the distributor, wholesaler or retailer from which the unit was purchased.

Technical support
Beginning April 1st, 2007 the optical drive business has been transferred to Sony NEC Optiarc America. Please contact Sony NEC Optiarc for support on Sony NEC Optiarc branded drives (AD-5170, AD-7170, AD-5540) via email.

For NEC branded drives purchased as a retail kit, please do the following:

  1. Send an email to oem.storage@necam.com requesting technical support or fax your request to (916) 636-5093. Please be sure to include your service tag number in the subject heading of your request as this service tag number is used to validate warranty entitlement.
  2. Explain the problem with the drive.
  3. Provide all contact information – telephone number and email address - so a customer service representative may follow up with you. If your NEC branded drive does not have a service tag number, please contact your place of purchase for support.
