This release is a combination of the installer program, System
Installation Utility (SIU), an installer directive file, SYSINST.INF,
a compressed file of all the applications it loads, SYSINST.Z, and its
associated packing list, SETUP.PKG.
The SIU is a previously released application, and the directive file,
SYSINST.INF is included in this release. To build the compressed file,
the applications are located in a subdirectory structure, and this
entire structure is compressed using InstallShield's compressor. The
packing list generator creates the packing list.

1 Contents: The Intel® SpeedStep™ technology Applet consists of a user-mode user interface and kernel-mode driver supplied to OEMs for installation. The Intel SpeedStep technology Applet is installed using the supplied InstallShield setup program. Please refer to the Installing for the first time: section for details on installing the Applet in different languages.
All installation files are delivered in a password-encrypted .zip files. One contains the OEM installation files, the others include the language specific end-user installation files.
Once installed, the complete Intel SpeedStep technology Applet installation includes the following files:
Readme.rtf – This file (OEM install only: located with the OEM installation files) Prpcui.exe – User interface executable Prpcui.dll – User interface support library Prpclang.dll – User interface resource dynamic link library (different for each language) Prpcui.hlp – Context-sensitive help file (different for each language) Prpc.vxd – Kernel-mode driver for Windows* 95 Prpc.sys – Kernel-mode driver for Windows 98, Windows NT* 4.0 and Windows 2000 Prpc.cat – Signature file assigned by Microsoft WHQL group (Currently available for English installation only) Prpc.inf – Setup file for associating the signature file with the program.
NOTE on Windows 2000: The Intel SpeedStep technology Applet has been tested on Windows 2000, Build 2195.
1.1 New Features 1.1.1 Features added to the v1.1 update release The v1.1 update release of the Intel SpeedStep Applet is targeted as a Windows 2000 update. This version of the Applet is logo’ed for Windows 2000 and will include several feature updates and fixes for errata. The update includes: The v1.1 release will be logo’ed for Windows 2000, Windows 98 and Windows NT4.0. The signature files, PRPC.CAT, included with the v1.1 release will include signatures for the localized support files (28 languages total). The default Flags registry value has been changed to allow two-way transitions on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. The Registry.ini file has also been updated to reflect this change. (This change was made to v1.0a, but is reinforced here.) The v1.1 release includes major revisions to the layout of registry values, including two new registry values, AppletTimeout and SetStateRetry. Several of the registry values have changed names or location. The Prefs registry value has been broken-out into PollPeriod, SystemPrefs and UserPrefs. The ExitCode value remains, but only reflects driver exit conditions; a unique AppExitCode has been added to reflect the Applet exit condition. The UserPrefs and AppExitCode have been moved from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER tree to comply with operating system security restrictions. AppletTimeout is a new OEM configuration registry value, given in seconds, that sets a maximum delay for which the Applet may wait for the driver to load before reporting an error. This change is in response to the errata noted where the IST Applet may load before the driver initializes under Windows NT 4.0. The change however works under all operating systems. SetStateRetry is a new OEM configuration registry value that sets the number of times the driver will attempt a SetState SMI call before returning an error. Previous versions of the Applet were hard-coded to 1024. The v1.1 release restores the processor performance level to the pre-suspend state. When the system is suspended, the Applet still returns transition control to the BIOS. However, during the first timer poll upon resume, the Applet will perform a check of whether the processor performance level has changed since the last poll that occurred before suspending. If it has changed, the Applet will restore the previous processor performance level. Windows NT4.0 and Windows 2000 systems only. The IST Applet v1.0 required the user to have administrative privilege to load properly. The v1.1 release has been updated to load properly for all user groups. The v1.1 installation also checks for administrative privilege level during installation and aborts if the user does not have the correct privilege level. With v1.1, restricted users (those users with read-only privilege to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry tree) will not be able to change system level preferences. System level preferences include the ability to disable the Applet and the processor performance level preferences for AC and battery. These choices will be grayed out. User preferences will not be effected. Windows NT4.0 only. Some OEMs may have implemented the PrpcLdr workaround to avoid the premature loading of the Applet, in which the PrpcLdr.exe file was copied to the \Winnt\System32 directory and some registry keys added to load the service. The v1.1 installation will look for these additions and remove them from the target system during the installation process. Systems that are non-IST capable only. If a system does not support IST, the Applet has been updated to uninstall completely by performing a silent InstallShield uninstall. The driver has been update to exit without error the first time it loads on non-IST capable systems. This behavior keeps the operating system from writing an error to the event viewer log. 1.1.2 Features added to the v1.0a installation update release A v1.0a installation update has been released to address some issues. The workarounds/fixes described do not require any changes to the IST Applet objects, therefore there was no need for a WHQL submission. The issues addressed include: The default Flags registry value has been changed to allow two-way transitions on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. The Registry.ini file has also been updated to reflect this change. The installation program will now display a version number in the initial setup screen. This change effects Windows NT4.0 systems only. Under certain conditions, the operating system might load the IST Applet before the driver has initialized. When this occurs, the Applet comes up in the disabled state. An example of this condition is a ful

NOTE:
-----
Windows 2000 does not offload fragmented IP traffic to the adapter.
NOTE for PRO/100 S Adapter Users:
---------------------------------
If Windows 2000 is enabled for IPSec encryption, the
PRO/100 S adapter automatically offloads the intensive
encryption and authentication functions onto the IPSec
co-processor on the adapter. (The PRO/100 S adapter driver
registers with the operating system to automatically enable
this function.) The result is an increase in throughput
and a decrease in CPU utilization.
Note for Windows NT 4 Users:
----------------------------
If you upgrade your operating system from Windows NT 4.0 to
Windows 2000, you may need to re-specify your settings for
Speed and Duplex in PROSet.
Install Network Drivers from Disk
---------------------------------
After you put the adapter in the computer, connect
the cable, plug in the power cord and start Windows, Windows
automatically installs a driver for the adapter from its own
library of drivers.
However, you should still install the driver that is included
on the Intel adapter CD to ensure you have the complete
set of features for the adapter. You can install this driver
manually using the following instructions:
To update the driver for the adapter:
1. Insert the Intel adapter CD or disk.
2. From the Control Panel, double-click the System icon, select
the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button.
3. Select "Network Adapters" and right-click on the appropriate
adapter listing to display its menu. Then click
the Properties menu option.
4. From the Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab and
click the Update Driver button. The Update Device Driver
Wizard appears. Click Next.
5. At the prompt "What do you want the wizard to do?", select
the "Search for a suitable driver for my device" radio button,
and click Next.
6. Select the appropriate media checkbox and click Next.
7. Select the "Install one of the other drivers" check box and
click Next.
8. Select the driver on the Intel adapter CD or disk and click
Next.
9. Restart your computer.
After restarting Windows, connect to your network by double-clicking
the My Network Places icon on the desktop.
